Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to commonly asked questions by patients seeking treatment with Hormone Optimization & Sexual Wellness.

  • How do I know if my hormones are 'out of balance'?
Hormone changes can show up in different ways for different people. Common symptoms include low energy, weight changes, reduced libido, sleep problems, mood changes, brain fog, and difficulty building or maintaining muscle mass.

The only way to know for sure is through a medical evaluation and lab testing. During your consultation, we review your symptoms, health history, and lab results to determine whether hormone therapy is appropriate — and to rule out other causes.
  • Is hormone therapy safe?
When properly prescribed and monitored under physician supervision, hormone therapy can be both safe and effective for appropriately selected patients.

Your plan is personalized based on:

    • lab results

    • medical history

    • risk factors

    • your goals

We use the lowest effective dose and monitor your response closely with follow-up visits and periodic labs. Not everyone is a candidate, and safety always comes first.
  • How soon will I notice improvement?
This varies from person to person and depends on which hormones are being optimized. Some patients notice improvements in energy, sleep, and mood within a few weeks, while changes in body composition, libido, and sexual function may continue improving over several months.

Hormone optimization is a process, not a quick fix, and results are monitored and adjusted over time.
  • Can hormone therapy help with low libido or sexual dysfunction?
In many cases, yes. Testosterone, estrogen, thyroid function, vaginal health, pelvic floor function, stress, and relationship factors can all influence sexual wellness.

We look at the whole picture, not just a single hormone level. Treatment may include hormone optimization, sexual-wellness therapies, lifestyle recommendations, or referral when appropriate. Your plan is individualized and focused on both safety and quality of life.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT)

Bioidentical Hormones • Lab-Guided • Physician-Monitored

Hormone replacement using hormones identical to those your body makes.

Bioidentical hormones have the same chemical structure as the estrogen, progesterone and testosterone your body produces naturally. When your own levels drop – with menopause, low testosterone or certain medical conditions – BHRT can replace what is missing and ease symptoms such as hot flashes, poor sleep, low energy and low libido. Treatment is prescribed according to your symptoms, medical history, appropriate testing and your individual risks and benefits.

At Valoura Med Spa, BHRT is prescribed and monitored by a board-certified physician at our clinic in Savoy, a few minutes from Champaign and Urbana, with lab testing before and during treatment.

WHO BHRT MAY HELP

Often considered for:

  • ✓ Women with menopause or perimenopause symptoms
  • ✓ Men with confirmed low testosterone and symptoms
  • ✓ Adults whose hormone levels have dropped after surgery or other treatment

FDA-APPROVED AND COMPOUNDED HORMONES

Some bioidentical hormones are available as FDA-approved products, which are tested for consistent strength and quality. Others are custom-compounded by a pharmacy. Compounded preparations are not FDA-approved, and major medical organizations recommend using them only when an approved product is not suitable. We explain which option we recommend for you and why.

  • ✓ Follow-up labs: usually 6–12 weeks after starting, then at regular intervals

RISKS AND MONITORING

Like any hormone treatment, BHRT has possible risks as well as benefits. Risks and contraindications depend on the specific hormone and the route of administration – for example a patch, gel, capsule, injection or pellet – as well as the dose, your age and your health history. We discuss them with you before starting, use the lowest effective dose and monitor you with regular check-ups and lab tests.

WHO SHOULD WAIT

Depending on the hormone and how it is given, BHRT may not be suitable, or may need extra care, if you:

  • ✓ Are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • ✓ Have had breast, uterine or prostate cancer
  • ✓ Have had blood clots, a stroke or a heart attack
  • ✓ Have unexplained vaginal bleeding
  • ✓ Have active liver disease

This list is a guide only. Our physician confirms suitability at your consultation.
